Branding Your Business, Business Communications, Public Relations

Got a game plan? Get your jargon.

How best to communicate with the media? Here is industry jargon defined.
• Media Alert – Announces news and events to encourage media to cover the event or write a feature. Give reporters the information they need to be inspired to write a story about your news or event.
• Media Release – A short article or announcement intended to be published as submitted. Your goal is to gain interest at the editor’s desk for why this will interest the audience.
• Press Release – Your information may not be “news” but it is “newsworthy.” Intrigue journalists to consider telling your story by providing them with the who, what, where, when, why and how of your idea, company or involvement.
• Press Statement – Often prepared for press conferences or used in crisis PR, this is an official statement of your company’s position on a specific issue.
• Public Service Announcement (PSA) – News and event information generally reserved for non-profits, charitable and community events.
